I finally got the nerve to try and paint one of my big creatures and I think it was a success! This is my custom converted Forgefiend for my 1K sons army. Next on the painting table, another Forgefiend, two Helldrakes, and some really good beer.

My progress … now with basing complete!

1 squad of 1k sons completely finished, and 1/3rd of my skeleton cultist horde finished!

Also finished is that big skeletal red guy in the middle of the cultists. He is my Dark Apostle.

The last picture is my favorite pair of cultists. One needed a weapon, now the other is missing a leg.

Thank you TemperusMaximus for the snow base idea. I really like how these units look on this terrain.

I’ve got another 1k sons squad, 24 more cultists, 2 Helldrakes, 2 Forgefiends, Ahriman, and 5 Terminators left to paint in this army.

I found this picture of Malcador, not sure who the artist is, but I was interested in the skulls on his throne. Both look human size and are marked 2 and 11, which I think are the numbers of the two lost legions. Does anyone have any history or insight into why Malcador has these so obviously displayed?

So basically, Malcador was the Emperor’s right hand men. He founded both the Adeptus Administratum and the Offico Assassinorum (in which he also served as the first Grand-Master of Assassins.) He also set the groundwork for the Grey Knights and the Inquisition (His personal symbol is the symbol for the Inquisition, as seen above.) So, from what very little we known about the missing legions, and the fact that there skulls on his throne with their numbers, it would be logical to say He had a hand in their disappearance.

Now I would like to turn our attention to another legion, the Space Wolves. Basically, before the Hersey, the idea that Space Marines fighting Space Marines was so crazy that many deemed it impossible. When Loken had to kill that corrupted marine during Horus Rising, it troubled him greatly. In Know No Fear, we have an ultramarine in deep trouble because he was speculating on tactics against other Space Marines. So we are led to believe that a Space Marine vs Space Marine battle was considered by many to be insane. Yet if we are to believe what the Space Wolves said during A Thousand Sons, that the attack on Prospero wasn’t the first time Legions had clashed, then we have conflicting ideas. More importantly we learned that the Space Wolves were known as the Emperor’s Executioners! But who where they executing? It wasn’t xenos or chaos, as all the other legions were fighting those threats just like the Space Wolves! So how did the Space Wolves recieve the name the Emperor’s Executioners when the idea of Space Marine fighting Space Marine was considered impossible?

With all this evidence, my theory is that for some reason, the 2nd and 11th legions were deemed a threat to the stability of the Imperium of Man and the Malacador, either by his own accord or by the order of the Emperor, ordered Leman Russ (Who was just as vicious as legions like the World Eaters, but had more self-control) to destroy them completely or at least kill their Primarchs (Leman Russ has no second thoughts when he tried to break Magnus’ back.) I prefer the latter, as the Ultramarines received quite a boost in their numbers after the Primarchs swore that they would never speak of their missing brothers. It also makes sense, that since Malacdor was the Emperor constantly, he would have been there when they swore the oath. More importanly, many of the primachs did not like taking orders from Malcador, so this could have been a silent reminder of the power he had.

This is just my theory, and chances are that is completely wrong. The Artist could have just added those in as filler art. But it was a fun question to answer, and hopefully more people can add their thoughts! have a wonderful day!

That is a really interesting theory, and it explains one thing that has troubled me:

Why does the Emperor send the Space Wolves to destroy Prospero?

I mean, as a Thousand Sons fangirl first and foremost I don’t think He should have sent anyone after Prospero. But why the Wolves, when the Emperor is established to have understood why Magnus did what he did, he sympathizes with Magnus, and then he sends the legion that the Thousand Sons have been feuding with, why? It seems like a douche move, to pile on that extra humiliation.

Especially since Magnus originally intended to let his legion be destroyed. And the Emperor would know that, since he and Magnus have shared a telepathic link since Magnus was formed. But basically - why would the Emperor send the Wolves, specifically?

He sent the Space Wolves specifically because they’re the chapter that was the best at Space Marine vs Space Marine combat. Also, there was some manipulation by Horus. Originally the Space Wolves were just supposed to bring back Magnus alive to stand trial, but Horus (Now fully corrupt at this point) Told him that Magnus had dissed the Space Wolves, and were plotting against the Emperor. The Space Wolves were having none of that, and proceeded to roflstomp the snot out of the Thousand Sons.

In addition, when Magnus sent the Psyker message to the Big E, it caused problems with this project The Emprah was working on, which was an alternative to warp travel, similar to the Eldar Webway technology. Unfortunately, nasty, nasty critters got in and the portal had to be shut and guarded at all times (That’s the Golden Throne BTW) because the Emperor knew not even his Primarchs could handle the stuff in there.

TL;DR the original plan was a lot nicer and humane, but Horus fucked it up beyond all recognition to destroy a potential loyalist legion that would have made it hard for him to do as well as he did in the Heresy.

This is exactly what we’re wondering. How’d they get good at combat with other legions? Sure, I’d expect the legions to participate in wargames with each other, but to be really, really good at it - I mean I don’t want to think the Emperor sent the Wolves just to humiliate the Thousand Sons, right? - to be really good at it, it implies that they had more than just practice.

I’d guess partly because they’re from a death world, and partly because of that theory that they’re the ones that took out the missing legions. I don’t think we’ll ever get a real answer though Knowing GW’s of super serial secret mysteries to make the fluff grimdark, and how notoriously contradictory their writers are fluff wise.

Possibly! I remember reading a short story (and now I’m forgetting the name of the story) where Rogal Dorn mentions that two legions are gone forever, but only one had turned against the Imperium.

This art is for the latest part in the Garro audiodrama series, The Sigilite. But it is unlikely that they would represent The Forgotten and the Purged, as it was said that the Emperor personally erased them from history, it is implied that the Space Wolves killed the Primarchs themselves, and that Magnus the Red and Mortarion were both there (Mortarion being one of the last five primarchs to be found), and since the purge occurred before the discovery of Corvus Corax, it would be difficult to connect Malcador to the lost legions as he is never mentioned as having anything to do with them (as it is also implied that the two legions were folded into the Ultramarines)
